Claddagh - Sydney's popular Irish folk band

Traditional or folk music could scarcely be considered complete without reference to the rich, extensive archive of Celtic song, which has spread with our emigrants to every corner of the world and has been passed from one generation to the next.

Claddagh, Sydney's most exciting and versatile traditional folk band for many years prides itself in its variety of singing styles and vast repertoire of songs, ensuring that no two consecutive performances offer the same entertainment. Claddagh's current line-up includes original member and Band Leader Jimmy Moore, with Leon Delander and Jimmy Closs. Each member plays a range of instruments, and their powerful harmonies and sensitive musicianship produces an irresistible satisfying and unquestionably Irish sound.

What to expect at a Claddagh Performance

A Claddagh performance typically involves a greater level of audience participation than any other Irish band on the scene. Claddagh doesn't play to a 'set list', rather preferring to encourage the audience to request their favourite song, tunes or ballads, ensuring that the audience has heard all the songs they love and have had a great time doing so!

With Jimmy's vast encyclopaedic knowledge of Celtic songs, it is very rare that Claddagh are stumped by a request.

Another unique feature of a typical Claddagh show is the introduction of well-known Irish musicians and dancers, from fiddle players, whistle players and uilleann pipe players to set dancers and solo performers. Many an audience has been delighted with the surprise performance of an Australian Champion dancer or two!

Also, at many Claddagh shows, willing members of the audience are invited to try their hand at singing a song or playing an instrument.

Some of the more enduring and popularsongs in folk music of any style are ballads, as all ballads tell a story, with each one holding different meaning and engendering different feelings in all who hear it.  Arguably, Claddagh's greatest strength lies in their sympathetic interpretations of the most famous Celtic ballads. Their latest CD, Easy & Slow, is a true reflection of this ability.
